General PSiO FAQ

What is a PSiO ?
It's a variable frequency audiovisual stimulator. Despite the complicated name, it's fairly simple technology that sends sound and light in very precise rhythms. It has been known since the dawn of time that these rhythms influence a person's state of mind: waking, sleeping, relaxation, and meditation are all correlated with brain rhythms which are themselves impacted by the rhythms of the sounds and light received. The frequency of visual and auditory stimulation in a PSiO varies from three to 15 cycles/second. This technology makes it possible to have a positive influence on the rhythms of neurons and therefore to induce or boost many of the mind's natural abilities.

Is the light emitted dangerous ?
No, you can use it as often as you like unless you suffer from photosensitive epilepsy.

This graph shows the action of the light emitted by the diode (red, green and blue lines) with respect to sunlight (in grey-brown). It clearly shows that no ultraviolet or infrared rays are emitted by the light source. There is therefore NO danger if you open your eyes during a session. It's simply a matter of setting the light intensity for comfortable use. Light sensitivity varies significantly from one person to another. Some people will use their PSiO at the minimum intensity level for optimal comfort.

LNE Certification (French National Metrology and Testing Laboratory)
LNE measured the maximum luminous intensity of the PSiO and prepared a report certifying that the light emitted by the PSiO is about 3 times under the limit of risk zero for the retina. However, sensitivity to light is highly variable from one individual to another. At the beginning, it is advisable to practice sessions by adjusting the light on the minimum level. If the light intensity is still felt too strong, you can close your eyes, the effects of the same are the same eyes closed or eyes opened. You will find the report of the ESA on this link: http://www.psio.com/pdf/LNE-certification-EN.pdf

My eyelids seem to be blinking with the light.
Reduce the light intensity so that it's more comfortable for you.

Has the product been tested ?
Millions of users around the world use the technology which is well known today. The technique has been used by university clinics as a method for quick relaxation in stressful operating room and sleep laboratory environments for more than 20 years.

Is it a medical product ?
No, it can reduce stress-related problems in some cases, the way sport does, for example, but it shouldn't be viewed as NOT OK a "medical" device especially given that there is no danger or secondary effects. A medical prescription isn't required. You simply need to refer to the user's manual.

Is the product intended for the general public ?
Yes, anyone can put it on the night stand beside their bed. It's ideal for effective recovery from mental effort or chronic stress.

How many programs are there on my PSiO ?
3 Music and Colours, 7 Beats and Colours and 1 Voice, Music and Colours

Can other programs be downloaded ?
Yes, the download platform at www.psioplanet.com allows you to download multiple programs with specific themes.

What happens if I download an MP3 file from another source to my glasses ?
You can listen to it the way you would on an iPod®, but without the coloured lights. So, it's not of much value.

Will there be more programs in the future ?
We're planning to add new titles and thousands of new songs every month.

How many spheres of use are there for my PSiO ?
There are four application families available at: coloured music, Meditation, Performance and Relaxation.

Can blind people benefit from PSiO?
Yes, on the one hand the effect is partly due to hearing and on the other hand the light therapy acts on the non-visual system located in the eye. The non-visual system is fortunately active for blind people as for sighted people and is connected to the biological clock. However, blind people do not benefit from the distracting effect of pulsed light.

Can the hearing impaired benefit from PSiO?
Yes, because the pulsations of light have a distracting effect anyway and will therefore induce a “letting go” sensation automatically. Moreover, the biological clock is stimulated during Power Naps. Of course, not all audio messages can pass. It is therefore light therapy and relaxation by light only.

Technical FAQ

Should I save the programs already on my PSiO ?
Yes. Please copy ALL the content on the device to a folder on your computer. It will be useful in case of accidental deletion of programs.

How do I recharge my PSiO?
It's recommended that you allow your PSiO to charge for at least four hours before first use. Make sure that the device is on when charging.
You can recharge your PSiO using the USB cable and the charger provided in the package or by connecting the USB cable to your computer.

When should I recharge the battery?
The battery included doesn't have a memory. You can recharge it whenever you want without affecting its future performance. We recommend that you recharge your PSiO completely when there is one bar left on the battery indicator. If no bar is showing, your PSiO will still work for about an hour. You can end the program under way, but it's better to recharge your PSiO after that.

Why do a "RESET"?
If you push the “RESET” button, it's important to fully charge the battery using the AC adapter before disconnecting the USB cable from the PSiO. The microcontroller always sees the battery as discharged when a RESET is done. When connected to the transformer with the battery charging, the micro-controller receives a "charged battery" signal when it is 100% charged. The PSiO resynchronizes immediately and operates normally. When the PSiO isn't connected to the charger, the PSiO battery icon will display "discharged battery" after a RESET, regardless of the real battery charge level. If you have to do a RESET, recharge the PSiO until the battery light shows "fully charged". Then unplug it and use it normally.

Charged battery icon / Flat battery icon

The icon on the screen will display four solid bars when the battery is fully charged.
The battery icon will show no bars when the battery is nearly flat. You should charge the PSiO using the AC adapter.

Battery charging icon

The battery icon will display an electrical plug after the PSiO is connected to the AC adapter or the computer. This icon will remain as long as the battery isn't fully charged. When the battery is fully charged, the icon will be white without a plug.

 “PSiO Glasses initializing” message

This message appears briefly when the RESET button is pressed. The message “Plug in your PSiO” will display after a few seconds.

“Plug in your PSiO” message

  • Either the PSiO battery isn't charged enough and has to be connected to the AC adaptor and charged 100%.
  • Or you just pressed the “RESET” button. This erases the battery charge level and sets it to zero. You must connect the PSiO to the AC adapter to charge it 100%.

IMPORTANT: if you used the “RESET” button, DON'T interrupt charging until the battery is 100% charged, that is, until the battery icon displays an electrical plug (see the “Battery charging icon” section).

“USB Mode” message

This message indicates that the PSiO is connected to a computer and is ready for file transfers with the computer. The PSiO cannot play a session and the battery charges in this mode.

“No MP3 Files” message

The PSiO cannot find any MP3 files in memory. Connect it to a computer to display its contents.

  • If the PSiO opens correctly on your computer but doesn't contain any files, it means that the MP3 files have been erased. In this case, load the PSiO with the MP3 color files that are in the library on your computer.
  • If the PSiO doesn't open when connected to your computer or you can't display its contents, you will have to format it. Follow the instructions found under “Please format in FAT32”.

“Please format in FAT32” message

You must format the device, that is, erase its contents and reconfigure it with the correct format.

Turn on the PSiO and connect it to your computer via a USB port. The “USB Mode” message will appear on the PSiO screen.

  • If you use WINDOWS :
    • Click on the Windows logo (Windows 8, 7 & Vista) or on the “Start” button (Windows XP).
    • Open “Computer” (Windows 8, 7 & Vista) or “Workstation” (Windows XP). The PSiO will be displayed as a new disk.
    • Select it and right click. Choose "Format" on the menu that appears.
    • A window will open with options. Set the "File System" to "FAT32" and the "Allocation Unit Size" to "Default Allocation Size". Be sure that the "Quick Format" box is checked in the formatting options at the bottom of this window. Click on the "Start" button.
    • A warning will inform you that you are about to erase all of the device content. Click on the "OK" button.
    • Formatting starts and lasts about a minute. When finished, a message displays to indicate that formatting is finished. Click on the "OK" button.
    • Close the formatting window by clicking on the "Close" button.
    • Go back to "Computer" or "Workstation" and click twice on the PSiO peripheral. You will see that the PSiO no longer contains any files.
    • You can now load MP3 Color files.
  • You can't format the PSiO for FAT32 if you are using a MAC. You have to use a computer with Windows.

Connecting the PSiO with Mac computers
1. If you are unable to transfer programs on your PSiO while it does not contain many programs, you need to empty your recycle bin. When deleting programs on your PSiO with a Mac, they go in the trash and continue to use space in the device memory. To recover this memory space, empty the recycle bin with the PSiO connected to the Mac.
2. When safely removing the PSiO from the Mac, disconnect the USB cable immediately otherwise the PSiO automatically reconnects to the computer. If it reconnects, you can unplug the USB cable, but a warning message will appear, simply click on the OK button.

What happens if I leave my PSiO turned on after a session?
The PSiO will turn off automatically at the end of a program, after five minutes of inactivity.
If you pause in the middle, the PSiO will turn off after 10 minutes of inactivity.

What happens if my PSiO shuts off after a session and I've fallen asleep?
Just press the ON/OFF button to start it again.

Can I stop a session and start it again later?
You can stop a session by pushing Pause (ON/OFF button). Pushing a second time will start up the session where you left off. If you pause for more than 10 minutes, the PSiO will shut off automatically.

How can I add new programs to my PSiO (www.psioplanet.com)?
Go to the Boutique on the site and select the programs you want to buy. Once your payment has been accepted, you will be asked to download your program. You can save it directly on your PSiO, but we recommend that you create a PSiO folder on your computer where you can save all of your programs for easy retrieval later on. If your PSiO isn't connected to your computer, connect it and copy the file to your PSiO the way you would to a USB key. WARNING! Wait until the file has been completely copied before disconnecting your USB or use your computer's "Safely remove hardware and eject media" command.

How can I remove songs purchased from my PSiO without losing them in my base list?
Connect your PSiO to your computer with the USB cable. Turn on your PSiO. It will be detected as a storage peripheral called PSiO. You can then erase the files the same way you would erase files on a USB key.

My screen goes out after five seconds, but the session continues. Is that normal?
In order to save on battery life we decided to have the screen shut off after five seconds. If you want to see the information displayed, just push on any button and the screen will turn on. Taking this function into account, we recommend that you use the sound and light setting buttons.

Why do I have to provide my serial number when I create my account on www.psioplanet.com?
You can enter your PSiO's serial number when you create your user account on www.psioplanet.com. We recommend that you do this either at that time or later by clicking on "Register your PSiO's serial no" or "Modify my data". The number will be your guarantee and will also provide access to a number of free programs.

Where can I find the serial number?
A complete serial number is located on the left arm of the glasses or on the back of the Quick Start manual.

I have several PSiOs. Can I enter several serial numbers?
You can connect to www.psioplanet.com at any time and click on "Register an additional serial no" or select "Modify my data" at the top right of the screen. You can then enter up to five different serial numbers.

My PSiO doesn't seem to be working properly any more. What should I do?
If your PSiO doesn't seem to be working properly (not reading sound correctly, the lights don't come on, etc.), push the Reset button with the point of a pen. The default factory settings will be restored. The message "Plug in your PSiO" will display on the screen. Recharge your PSiO as if it were the first use. Don't forget to leave it on during charging.

How can I clean my PSiO?
Use a damp, non-abrasive cloth (the type used to clean the lenses of glasses).
